Recipient of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama
for her play 'night, Mother. 
 

Her works include the book and lyrics for the Broadway musicals
The Secret Garden, for which she won a Tony Award, and
The Color Purple and the libretto for The Trumpet of the Swan: A Novel Symphony. 

She currently serves on the faculty of the Juilliard School in New York City.  Is a former Vice-President of the Dramatists Guild of America, Co-Founder of The Lilly Awards, and a Board member of the Writers Guild of America East Foundation.
